FOSTERING NATIONAL UNITY AND DEVELOPMENT THROUGH A UNIFIED NIGERIAN LANGUAGE
Abstract:
Nigeria is
a nation characterized by linguistic diversity, however, this poses a challenge
of uniting her people to foster national development. This article explores the
concept of creating a unified Nigerian language, "Nigerian," by
dividing the total number of words in the English Oxford dictionary by the
total number of indigenous Nigerian languages, resulting in a Language Factor. By examining the potential of
"Nigerian" as the lingua franca, its role in fostering
intermarriages, national integration, and cohesion, and its implications for
Nigeria's economy, this article presents a comprehensive plan for its
implementation. This article also outlines an estimated timeline and
methodology for introducing "Nigerian" in a manner that is efficient,
acceptable to all Nigerians, and conducive to the nation's economic growth.
The Birth of a New Language |
INTRODUCTION
Nigeria,
with its diverse ethnic groups and languages, stands as a testament to Africa's
rich cultural heritage. However, this diversity has posed significant
challenges in terms of national unity and development. In a nation where
hundreds of indigenous languages are spoken, communication barriers have
hampered cohesion and integration. This
article introduces the concept of creating a unified indigenous Nigerian
language, "Nigerian," which will be developed using the Language
Factor as a guiding principle.
The Language Factor is a
calculated value obtained by dividing the total number of words in the English
Oxford dictionary by the total number of indigenous Nigerian languages. This
approach ensures that each indigenous Nigerian language contributes equally to
the creation of "Nigerian". If we could make "Nigerian" the lingua franca by mandating
its use in schools, media, and public communications, we could perhaps, foster
national unity and development.
THE CONCEPT OF AN INDIGENOUS NIGERIAN LANGUAGE
The Language Factor:
The
Language Factor is a calculated figure that divides the total number of words
in the English Oxford dictionary by the total number of indigenous Nigerian
languages. This calculation results in a standardized number of English words
for each indigenous language to translate, thereby ensuring equal
representation. For example, if there are 500,000 words in the English Oxford
dictionary, and we have 500 indigenous Nigerian languages, the Language Factor
is 1,000 words. By dividing 500,000 by 500, every indigenous Nigerian language
would translate 1,000 English words equally.
The Birth of “Nigerian”:
Using the
Language Factor as the foundation, "Nigerian" is created
collaboratively by incorporating equal elements from each indigenous Nigerian language.
This approach ensures that the development of the language is inclusive and
represents the diversity of Nigeria. This equal representation is a harbinger
of equity.
“NIGERIAN" IN EDUCATION
Ensuring
the success of this initiative involves mandating proficiency in
"Nigerian" for every Nigerian citizen. This requirement should be
enforced in schools, public institutions, and government bodies, guaranteeing a
consistent level of proficiency across the nation. This aims to promote
national unity and development. Consequently, the "Nigerian" language
should be adopted as the primary language of instruction in all Nigerian
schools. One may argue for the use of Pidgin English instead, but that defeats
the indigenous concept of the Nigerian language initiative. Therefore, this
initiative offers several advantages, these include:
Equal Access to Education:
Many
Nigerian students face disadvantages based on the regional languages they
speak, as education is often conducted in English language. By using
"Nigerian" as the language of instruction, students across the nation
will have equal access to education, leading to a more educated and skilled
workforce.
Enhanced Information Flow:
Using
"Nigerian" in mass media and public communication ensures that all
citizens, regardless of their ethnic background, can access and understand
vital information. This promotes better-informed decision-making and
strengthens the bonds between different ethnic groups.
THE CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC SIGNIFICANCE OF "NIGERIAN"
Celebrating Diversity:
The
creation of "Nigerian" does not seek to diminish the importance of
indigenous languages. Instead, it celebrates Nigeria's linguistic diversity by
incorporating elements of each language into the new language, preserving
cultural heritage.
Preserving Indigenous Languages:
While
"Nigerian" becomes the lingua franca, efforts must continue to
preserve and promote indigenous languages. Bilingual education programs could
be established to ensure that younger generations maintain a connection to
their cultural roots.
UNITING NIGERIANS THROUGH "NIGERIAN"
The
adoption of "Nigerian" as the national language would bring about
several benefits that promote national integration and cohesion, ultimately
leading to a peaceful atmosphere for united national development. Some ways by
which speaking “Nigerian” could unite her people include, but are not limited
to the following:
Fostering Interethnic Marriages:
A shared
language creates an environment in which individuals from different ethnic
backgrounds can communicate more easily. This linguistic unity can foster
intermarriages and relationships across ethnic lines, further weaving the
social fabric of the nation. As individuals from diverse backgrounds come
together through marriages, a stronger sense of unity and integration emerges.
Promoting Cultural Exchange:
A unified
language opens the door to greater cultural exchange among Nigeria's various
ethnic groups. People can share their traditions, customs, and practices more
effectively, fostering an atmosphere of mutual understanding and appreciation.
Enhancing Social Cohesion:
A common
language reduces communication barriers and allows for smoother interaction
among citizens. This enhanced social cohesion can bridge the gaps between
ethnic groups, leading to greater acceptance and respect for one another.
Peaceful Coexistence:
The unity
and cohesion created by a common language can contribute to a peaceful
atmosphere in which conflicts and misunderstandings are minimized. As Nigerians
from diverse backgrounds come together through shared communication, the path
to peaceful coexistence becomes clearer.
IMPLEMENTING "NIGERIAN": TIME FRAME AND METHODOLOGY
Implementing
the concept of "Nigerian" requires careful planning, collaboration,
and cooperation among various stakeholders, including government bodies,
educational institutions, and linguistic experts. The estimated timeline and
methodology are as follows:
Preparatory Phase (1-2 Years):
The
preparatory phase involves conducting extensive linguistic research and
consultation to determine the Language Factor and establish the groundwork for
creating "Nigerian." It also includes obtaining buy-in from relevant
authorities and stakeholders.
Language Development (3-5 Years):
This phase
focuses on the collaborative development of "Nigerian." Indigenous languages will contribute words, and linguistic experts will work to ensure
grammatical consistency and coherence. Cultural elements from each ethnic group
will be incorporated.
Educational Integration (5-7 Years):
During this
period, "Nigerian" will be gradually integrated into the education
system, starting with primary education and extending to tertiary institutions.
Bilingual programs will be established to aid in the preservation of indigenous
languages.
Mandatory Proficiency (8-10 Years):
Mandatory
language proficiency will be introduced in stages, with students and public
officials leading the way. Public communication will transition to
"Nigerian," and bilingual support will be provided as the transition
continues.
Public Awareness and Sensitization (Ongoing):
A
continuous public awareness campaign will educate citizens about the benefits
of "Nigerian" and the preservation of indigenous languages. Community
engagement initiatives will ensure widespread acceptance and participation.
THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF "NIGERIAN"
The
adoption of "Nigerian" as the unified indigenous Nigerian language is
anticipated to have significant economic benefits as enumerated below:
Enhanced Communication:
A common indigenous
language improves communication in the workplace, promoting efficiency,
productivity, and innovation. This results in an overall boost to the national
economy.
Increase in economic development
National Integration:
A more
integrated and united nation creates a conducive environment for economic
growth. Businesses can operate more smoothly across regions, fostering the
growth of local industries and services.
Foreign Direct Investment:
A unified
Nigeria with a shared indigenous language is more attractive to foreign
investors. The simplification of business processes and communication
encourages foreign investment, leading to economic development.
Cultural and Creative Industries:
The preservation
and celebration of Nigeria's diverse cultures through "Nigerian" can
enhance the cultural and creative industries such as the movie, music and arts
industries. These sectors can contribute significantly to the nation's economy
through tourism among others.
CONCLUSION
The creation of a unified indigenous Nigerian language, "Nigerian," has the potential to usher in an era of national unity and economic development. By making "Nigerian" the lingua franca, integrating it into education, fostering proficiency, and promoting intermarriages and cultural exchange, Nigeria can overcome the linguistic challenges that have hindered its progress since its amalgamation in 1914. This initiative is based on the principle of unity in diversity and celebrates the nation's rich cultural and linguistic heritage. While it presents challenges and complexities, the benefits are substantial, and its consideration and discussion among Nigerians are crucial. The implementation process, guided by a timeline and methodology, is designed to be timely, efficient, and acceptable to all citizens. As Nigeria unites through "Nigerian," it can unlock its economic potential and emerge as a more prosperous and harmonious nation.
I find this article very thoughtful and informative. If the Federal Government of Nigeria adopts this initiative, the benefits would be an outstanding pathway for economic development.
